Microsoft and leading training provider uke learning have together launched the UK’s first online IT Apprenticeship programme, allowing would be IT support experts to learn remotely using home and work computers. The first intake of Apprentices, who are earning while they learn, started the programme just in time for National Apprenticeship Week 7-11 February 2011, and will sit their first exams in a couple of weeks.
uke learning's directors, Rod Harris and Mick Durham, were delighted to be invited to meet with John Hayes MP, then Shadow Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education in November 2009, to discuss Conservative party policy on training. With our unique perspective as a successful and innovative training provider in the workplace; we were able to give him a view of how independent training providers can make a valuable contribution to the prosperity of UK business by increasing skills in the workforce. With an exceptionally successful delivery model, we were able to shed light on the elements needed to make best use of Government funding. This involves taking learners from potential to achievement, creating the best person for the job – not ready-made at the point of recruitment, but trained to be ideal for the role.

Ploughing much needed investment into Kent, skills training provider, uke learning launched its new office in Sittingbourne on 23 January 2009, with a warm welcome from local MP Derek Wyatt. “Training has rarely been as important as it is now,” he said. “Many Kent residents who have lost their jobs in recent months may see this as an opportunity to change career; but, clearly, they will need training. uke learning’s ability to help employers to identify funding for this will be essential to the county’s eventual economic recovery. Seeing uke learning invest in Kent now shows real commitment, and is a positive sign when there are all too few at the moment.” |

The new Apprenticeships are being run as part of Microsoft’s Britain Works 3 year employment initiative. The pilot combines remote delivery with holistic support from a tutor both online and by telephone, combined with brief periods in a classroom setting. This blended delivery model enables businesses to engage in IT Apprenticeships in a way that was not previously possible, allowing the active recruitment of Apprentices as full-time employees on day one of the Apprenticeship, no matter where they are located.
