Microsoft and leading training provider uke learning have together launched the UK’s first online IT Apprenticeship programme, allowing would be IT support experts to learn remotely using home and work computers. The first intake of Apprentices, who are earning while they learn, started the programme just in time for National Apprenticeship Week 7-11 February 2011, and will sit their first exams in a couple of weeks.
The new Apprenticeships are being run as part of Microsoft’s Britain Works 3 year employment initiative. The pilot combines remote delivery with holistic support from a tutor both online and by telephone, combined with brief periods in a classroom setting. This blended delivery model enables businesses to engage in IT Apprenticeships in a way that was not previously possible, allowing the active recruitment of Apprentices as full-time employees on day one of the Apprenticeship, no matter where they are located.
The programme delivers a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in technical support, using uke learning’s innovative delivery solution. Stephen Uden, Head of Skills at Microsoft UK said, “Part of Microsoft’s 3 year employment initiative, Britain Works, the uke learning version of the Microsoft Partner Apprenticeship plays a key part in ensuring we can offer the programme to partners located in all areas of the country. Their innovative approach to Apprenticeship delivery, utlising virtual classes and e-learning, complements and enhances the classroom methods which we also offer. We are delighted to be working with uke learning and look forward to further developing the partnership.”
Mick Durham, Director of uke learning said “We are very excited to launch this new programme, which will be rolled out nationally over the coming months. The Microsoft Partner Apprenticeship will allow businesses to develop qualified, Microsoft Certified IT Support Technicians as part of a structured programme, with the total cost of training fully funded by the Government for those Apprentices aged between 16 and 18. Half funding is available for those aged 19 – 24, the employer paying the remaining 50%.
January’s induction, which included a tour of the Microsoft Campus and an introduction into remote learning techniques, was a great success. Jake Shipley, 17, who is embarking on his Apprenticeship with Air- IT in Nottingham said, “If a career in computing and IT is what you’re interested in, then this is the perfect programme for you! Advanced Apprenticeships with uke learning are a brilliant way to get started. You can study from anywhere and with people in completely different parts of the country. Using e-learning techniques and mobile technologies, they not only are providing me with all the help and support I need to develop my skills and achieve qualifications recognised nationally, but are also helping me with useful employability skills for help within the workplace.”
